Grand Turk and South Caicos airports are now open for humanitarian flights, it has been confirmed.

Earlier today, Police Commissioner James Smith revealed that the two airports were now operational but are only open to emergency services at the moment.

He added that some limited food aid was delivered by volunteers to Grand Turk yesterday, with hopes that a commercial supply would be "delivered in the near future".

The Commissioner also reassured the public about the presence of military forces on the TCI, saying they were "augmenting my officers to ensure the safety of the nation".

"They have experts within their ranks to conduct engineering assessments, communications, medical and security needs. You will see them patrolling at the international airport with my officers and also assisting us on our mobile patrols including visiting the shelters.

"Please do not be alarmed at the presence of the military they are here to assist the Governor and the government in getting the country functioning as quickly as possible."
