Not that we needed any excuses to go on a girls weekend, it’s good to know that our desires to get out of town with our best gals and a few bottles of bubbly are backed up by science.

According to a report by Southern Living, spending time with your best girlfriends can improve mental and physical health. Studies show these friendships actually extend life expectancy, cut down the risk of heart disease and even help us tolerate pain.

Which makes total sense. I mean who do you turn to when you’re going through a tough break-up or a bad day at work - your girlfriends.

Spending time with mates is shown to increase our bodies production of the feel-good hormone, oxytocin.

Harvard researchers also agree saying that these strong relationships have a huge impact on overall health. They found, “Social connections like these not only give us pleasure, they also influence our long-term health in ways every bit as powerful as adequate sleep, a good diet and not smoking,”

On the opposite side of the spectrum, one study that researched 309,000 people found that a lack of strong social ties increased the risk of premature death from all causes by 50 per cent. This is the same as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

So get on the group chat and start planning your next trip to TCI. It’s as good for your health as a balanced diet and regular exercise.
