God help us but when it comes to dating, flirting or just generally trying to find the one, here in TCI, it's not easy work.

We can't read signs.

'Should I go in for the kill?'

'Does s/he think of me as just a friend?'

We spend hours analysing what to do and before we know it, the moment is gone.

Well fear not, because a new study by the journal Psychological Bulletin states that these factors let you know if someone is interested in you or not.

It has been described as 'the most comprehensive analysis ever' on subtle verbal and non-verbal cues.

It found that specific actions such as eye contact, smiling, laughter, and initiating conversation are associated with attraction across almost 50 countries as well as head nodding and mimicking behaviours.

"There is a specific suite of behaviors associated with liking, and this same set of behaviors can be found in cultures from around the world.

"When we like someone, we act in ways to get them to trust us. From this perspective, we engage in these behaviors to increase the degree of overlap, interdependence, and commitment to an agreement.

"Whether we engage in these behaviors has little or nothing to do with romantic desires. These behaviors apply when doctors interact with their patients, parents interact with their kids, or when salespeople talk to their customers," the head of the research stated.

They also debunked the myths of flirting and found that there is no link between attraction and hair flicking or eyebrow raising.

So, next time they laugh while twirling their hair, maybe hold off on going in for the kiss for another few minutes...
